Personal Statement

My name is Emily Pritt and I am a junior at North Carolina State University majoring in Media Communications with a minor in Journalism. I have above a 3.5 GPA coming into my fall semester this year. I am a media communications major because I want to be a sports broadcaster. In attempts to chase down my dream job of working for ESPN I've been working as a sports reporter for Wolf TV the past year. This fall I covered many NC State football games and this winter I will continue to follow all sports at NC State.

At the beginning of the semester COM 267- Media Writing was defined by the professor as such: "This course is designed to help you to understand the theory and process of writing for a variety of electronic media and apply that knowledge in practical, real-life situations. You will understand the role of the writer in the production process and learn to manage the professional, practical, political, economic, and cultural conditions that enable and constrain writing and the writer in different media writing contexts. As any good writing is well researched and carefully constructed, you will spend much of your time learning the rules of media writing as well as the ways in which a writer creatively bends and breaks those rules. This course is meant to be part theory and part practice, and you will therefore be engaged in equal parts critical analysis and project-oriented production." In the class I've learned how to classify good media writing, critically critique bad media writing, shot and edit film and radio podcasts and how to use new media technology. I've worked by myself and in a group and learned to create a media story and work with it all the way through to production. It has been quite a learning experience.

COM 267 has been a very important class for me because the career that I wish to pursue is a media job that is heavily involved with writing. Learning specific methods in this class, such as editing from Final Cut Pro, has allowed me to more efficiently create and edit a story with good media writing in mind. This class is also important to my journalism minor since good journalism goes hand-in-hand with media writing. Media writing is the new form of journalim, which is why this class is so important to me. I hope that I can take some things that I have learned from this class and apply it to both my future classes and job.
